Kindness

Kindness. It's everywhere, despite the current news cycle.

Sometimes, kindness is so profound, it can never be paid back, and it's difficult to imagine paying it forward to the extent you impact someone else's life the same way.

I do the best I can by gifting kindnesses, in mostly small ways, every day. A smile goes a long way, as does a compliment. I can only hope some of my kindnesses are as profound in someone else's life as others' have been in mine.

Saying Thank You is inadequate, but I'll put it out there anyway. I am most grateful for the gifts in my life. Thank you.

Check-in Ladies, you've already seen this, so you can skip it!

I believe humans, people, society, function better when we have villages. I don't mean literal villages where people live near each other in tiny towns, but social villages, where people support each other in myriad ways. I realized today I had taken to heart the idea "Be the change you want to see in the world," and I'm living it. It was an eye-opening moment for me to connect the little things I do every day to my view of how the world would work better.

Tonight's example is our Applebee's waitress. I was cranky about her, and asked Landlady for a reality check: was it just me? She agreed the woman was providing service, but without much enthusiasm. I talked it out with Landlady, brainstorming something positive I could say or do when I was coming up blank. In the end, when the woman came back to the table to check on us, I simply asked how her night was going. We chatted for a few minutes, and I found out she was back at work while she was still recovering from a respiratory infection. She was glad to have a job to support her babies, but she'd rather still be at home getting better. She told me that just me asking how her night was made her entire shift better, because it felt good to know someone cared.

In the end, even though nothing really changed (i.e. her service didn't improve a lot, though it did improve), I felt better about the whole thing, and she had more of a spring in her step as she went about her shift.

So, not big things at all, but a momentous shift in my psyche to recognize personal progress and welcome it. Not looking for kudos or anything, more just sharing a lightning-bolt moment in my life today.

I've finished importing both my personal journal and my lucywritesfic journal from lj to dw. All the things!

Tralala.

If you haven’t heard the news, SUP has relocated the Livejournal servers to Russia. The concerns associated with this move are fairly well documented here and here.

I will be exporting my personal and fic journals to Dreamwidth in the near future. If you own fic comms and want that fic preserved for posterity, check out the second link to learn how easy it is to export to DW. I know it's not the same, but the privacy concerns are REAL.

I am out of pocket the entire day today. If we've got something in progress, I'll get back to it tomorrow. I can only hope you're having more fun than I am.

Hugs, y'all!!

I've got about 2500 words on a 2015 bsg_kink bingo card fill. I changed something major and need someone to read through and make sure I changed all the pronouns properly, AND let me know if anything else is confusing. Also if it's worth continuing. You know, the usual. :D

I think [livejournal.com profile] plaid_slytherin, [livejournal.com profile] singerdiva01_sk, [livejournal.com profile] fragrantwoods, and [livejournal.com profile] laura_mayfair have access to it already. It's on page eight of "KINK - current week," which is obviously a badly-named document. lol

Anybody else has time, ask me to add you.

Edge of WildEdge of Wild by Danika Stone

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

FULL DISCLOSURE: I had the pleasure of reading this many months ago as an alpha reader, and I was gifted a digital copy of this book by the author. I am on the street team for this book. None of that in any way impacts my opinions. DK knows I would tell her if it blew.

Edge of Wild

The story has changed so much from initial writing to now, and is a better book for the input of Stonehouse Publishing.

Edge of Wild is a mystery. It's a love story. It's a paean to the Northern Rocky Mountains and Waterton, Alberta, Canada. It's a peek into the secrets kept even, perhaps especially, in a small town. Some of those secrets are worth killing over.

Rich is a fish out of water in Waterton, and he plans to enjoy the challenge of getting a hotel up and running in an area with not enough tourist traffic. What little enjoyment he has, though, is ruined piecemeal, with problems ranging from relatively fixable issues like plumbing to much more dangerous vandalism, along with creepy discoveries both in and outside of the hotel.

Lou is appealingly odd, and befriends Rich from the start when he brings his car in for repairs. She's got a gift for fixing things, a story for everything, and a ready smile whenever Rich shows up.

Edge of Wild is very much Rich's story, and yet Lou as his touchstone is integral to the plot.

You'll encounter suspense aplenty, with several smaller mysteries contributing to the larger plot arc. Intense descriptions of the scenery made me question more than once why I wasn't living there instead of in Texas.

Edge of Wild kept me reading every evening, is on my "rereadable" list, and has me more than curious about what comes next for this small town.

On another note, can someone please tell me if I'm ever going to like a picture someone takes of me?

They say you don't know what you've got until it's gone. It's true. When the ads started showing up, I was like, "WTF?" Oh, yeah. I expired. Frak. Note to self: that's why you want a paid account. lol

I have been so frakking busy. I feel like I'm not getting anything done, but I am, 'cause I've got checklists getting checked off. If I owe you something, it's on its way. I promise.

send help.  or a shovel.

ETA: Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] juliekaye! Sorry I missed it!

Jenny Crusie doesn't always flip my skirt with her blog posts, but this one makes perfect sense of my life, and coming to writing/editing/creativity in my late forties.

Plenty of Time

Galen calls them “experimental innovators,” people who have to research and understand and hone their skills in order to figure out what they want to do. They don’t start knowing, they search and learn in order to find out what they want to do. As Gladwell puts it, “The Cézannes of the world bloom late not as a result of some defect in character, or distraction, or lack of ambition, but because the kind of creativity that proceeds through trial and error necessarily takes a long time to come to fruition.”

It's oft been said that Lana has to do everything the slow way. It's true. Now I understand why.

There is plenty of time. But don't let that keep you from telling people you love them. There's never enough time for that.

My Fic

Dec. 31st, 2015 03:58 am
lanalucy: (Default)
If you want to read my fiction, definitely check out My AO3 .  Everything I write gets posted there, including commentfic, RPF, fics involving underage characters having sex, and original fiction. Those don't get posted here for various reasons, and some of them are locked to AO3 members only.

All my fic posts here are public, so anybody can read them, whether or not you've friended my fic journal.

My fanfic in this journal is entirely Battlestar Galactica 2003 -  mostly Kara paired with somebody.  I write a lot of smut, some genfic when the prompt strikes me just right. Any fic I write for other fandoms will only be posted to AO3.

I love fic recs, especially for good Kara/Helo stuff, so please tell me about something good you've read. When I find something Kara/Helo, I add it to the Thrace_Agathon collection at AO3.

And [livejournal.com profile] newnumbertwo is my trusty beta, even when I forget to acknowledge her in the posts, which I am ashamed to say happens often. We've added [livejournal.com profile] laura_mayfair to our writing village, and she's a welcome addition. Sometimes, [livejournal.com profile] singerdiva01_sk helps, and we like having her around, too.

By no means a comprehensive list of my fics, the following is a listing of ongoing or complete series or chapterfics. Some people would call the latter WIPs, but since each chapter stands alone in the same 'verse, I don't consider these works-in-progress

SERIES )
CHAPTERFICS )

Because I've seen this happening all over fandom, I'm putting this out there for the record.

I have no intention of taking my stuff down, either here (it's part of the reason I made a separate fic journal) or on AO3. If something were to happen to me, I can't imagine my daughter or my beta village would do so, either. But...if you save something offline for your own reading use, and for some reason my stuff is no longer available, please feel free to share my works with whomever asks.
