huh, okay... it's probably a silly question, but what does 'out of pocket' mean? I don't understand the context :/

You know, if I hadn't heard it all the time growing up, I wouldn't get it either. It's a colloquialism, probably Southern US in origin. Basically, it means I'm busy and out of reach by normal means. I had an all-day thing yesterday and would have had no way to work on any beta reading or editing.

Now you have me wondering about the origins and what it meant in the context of the time. I'll have to look it up. :D

ah yes, okay. that makes total sense. I've never heard that expression before, it sounds cool though. thank you for explaining :)

Interestingly, we have that phrase here too in the Northeast, but here it means when you have to pay for something yourself, instead of having some institution like insurance or your employer covering the cost for you.

I love little language differences like this. :)

We use out-of-pocket in that context, too. I think the way I used it is showing my age. lol
