Romeo + Juliet

As I was watching the beginning, I truly thought it was this bad on purpose, and it would get better. It didn't. Really.
This was abominably bad. If I had to choose movies to NEVER. WATCH. AGAIN., I would be hard pressed whether to put this or The Royal Tenebaums at the bottom of the list. I gave it one star on Netflix, which is something I've done only a handful of times.
Perhaps I am a philistine and just don't get highbrow stuff like Shakespeare. Maybe the acting just sucked. The only performances that actually seemed real to me were (amazingly!) Leo Dicaprio, Claire Danes and the guy playing the priest. Everybody else was appallingly bad. Maybe it was something else.
Part of the problem was taking the actual prose (is that the right term?) of Shakespeare and trying to meld it with semi-modern Verona Beach, NY (looked more like bad 70's porn settings) in settings and clothing and whatnot. Everybody sounded as if they were reading off cue cards, with the three above-mentioned exceptions.
I was stuck watching it as if I were witnessing a train wreck, completely unable to tear myself away and get on to something less horrible.
