Today's topic in a writing comm was:
Over the years we have all produced fic. Some of it has been rewarded with kudos and comments. There's not always a clear reason why some fics 'make it' into the readers acclaim or why. When public acclaim is taken into account: what are your best fics? Don't hesitate to post links.
I answered based only on top fics according to AO3 stats. I don't really pay much attention to ff.net. I post things there, then forget about them.
Blurring Lines w/60,530 hits (Kara/Lee)
Running Away w/45 kudos and 8 bookmarks (Kara/Lee/Sam)
Need to Know w/11 comment threads (Kara/Lee AU)
Interestingly, when I look at Bookmarked works, the top works there more accurately reflect stories which are special to me for one reason or another:
Marked (Kara/Zak, Kara/Lee)
Carnal Knowledge, This Time (Kara/Lee)
Insolence (Kara/Lee)
Like a Warm Sweater on a Cold Day (Kara/Lee)
Lessons in Nonverbal Communication (Kara/Lee)...
Aside from those listed above, some of my personal favorites are:
Take the Souls (Kara, Laura)
Beneath the Surface (Kara, Karl pre-canon)
I'll Dish All the Dirt (Kara, Hera post-canon)
Silent Witness (Kara, Bill pre-canon)
He Stopped Wondering Today (Kara/Zak, Kara, Karl, Kara/Lee pre-canon)
One True Thing (Kara/Zak, Kara/Lee pre-canon)
Combat Ribbons (Kara/Lee AU)
Strange Bedfellows (Kara/Saul post New Caprica)
Spinning Silk (Kara/Lee AU)
And, some explanations as to why I like these particular fics.
Running Away - It's interesting to explore the dynamic of the three of them creating a functioning relationship.
Marked - Zak realizes Kara and Lee are in love with each other, and the breakdown is ugly. The payoff is one of my favorites, though.
Carnal Knowledge - I think I like this one most because it's the one the Kara-troll picked on when he finally found my works on AO3. I do like it on its own, but knowing he hated it makes me smile.
Insolence - This was the first fic I wrote with a kink I knew nothing about. I like the way it looks at Kara and Lee's friendship.
Like a Warm Sweater - This one takes Lee's loyalty and Kara's impulsiveness and gives them consequences. I love the way it impacts the beginning of the series.
Lessons - This one was fun. Figuring out how a therapist would interact with Kara and Lee, what insights she would have into their work and personal relationships, how she would perceive Lee's similarities to Bill.
Take the Souls - I love the quiet spirituality of it.
Beneath the Surface - I absolutely love this look behind Kara and Karl's relationship, and how it could have impacted other students at the Academy.
I'll Dish all the Dirt - I love all the little bits of Kara peeking through in her actions.
Silent Witness - It's a small moment between Kara and Bill which helps build a foundation for their closeness going forward.
He Stopped Wondering Today - The outsider perspective here gives Kara's life a perfect melancholia.
One True Thing - I love the way Kara knows what she's doing is wrong and how she rationalizes doing it anyway.
Combat Ribbons - Of all my alternate versions of Kara and Lee, I think this is my favorite universe. There's so much information in little bits and pieces, and how Kara and Lee reconnect is sweet and still perfectly them.
Strange Bedfellows - This one explores the fractured dynamic between Kara and Saul after the New Caprica evacuation. They help each other heal by beating the crap out of each other, and in the end, it's their mutual love for Bill which makes them realize they need to stop.
Spinning Silk - This was my first experiment using a different way to write sexytimes, and I enjoyed the experience, plus it gave me more about an alternate Kara and Lee I liked meeting.
