I have the enviable job of outfitting a new house for a family of 8. If you were starting from scratch and had to get everything, what would you get? I'm really asking here, because what might occur to you, might not occur to me, and I don't want to miss anything.

If there are going to be wee kids living/visiting, make sure you get childproofing supplies for cabinets, electrical outlets, etc.

Kitchen:
pots - 4 sizes for something as small as soup to something big to cook pasta in
pans - 3 sizes
a good colander
a good set of knives
2 cutting boards - one for meat, one for vegetables
baking sheets
a set of corning ware casserole-type dishes
hand tools like can opener, potato peeler and garlic press (OXO is a great brand)
glasses in various sizes including wine glasses
a corkscrew
dishes
silver
dishtowels
a paper towel holder
paper towels
garbage bags
a toaster oven
a microwave
a coffee pot
cleaners
a dishdrainer - in the sink or not
serving bowls

Towels -- bath, hand, and kitchen. Sheets, blankets, pillows, mattress pads. Set of dishes, set of flatware, set of pots and pans, mixing bowls, baking pans. Pitcher, glassware. Set of cooking utensils, wooden spoons. Can opener! Bottle opener. Um, a whisk. This is hard. Cleaning supplies, a broom, mop, vacuum cleaner. Bathroom stuff, like toothbrush holders, toilet brushes. Trashcans for kitchen and bathroom. Cutting board. Lightbulbs and toilet paper. Canister set for flour, sugar, etc. Tea kettle or electric kettle. Toaster or toaster oven. Microwave. Bread knife, meat knife, etc. Potato peeler. Coffee maker. Um, I may think of some more later.

I only skimmed Kim's list, so forgive me if I repeat. Not sure how far-reaching the list should be, so just throwing some stuff out there.


Are there pets? If so, you know... pet food, litter boxes, leashes, pet beds..

Toys and games and coloring books and a deck of cards

School and office supplies -- computers, desks, pens/pencils/crayons, notebooks, paper,

CD players (portable and non-portable)

Candles (non-emergency), matches (or those butane lighter thingies, you know, the long ones that are child-safe)

Food staples like flour, sugar, vanilla extract, baking powder and baking soda, spices - the stuff that goes in the cupboards, you know?

Gift certificates for media like books, DVDs, CDs, & video rentals or NetFlix

Gardening supplies?

Basically I'd say just run out to IKEA, Target & Best Buy and walk through all the departments and you'll get more ideas...

Ikea can be very hairy and exhausting but, truly, it is the only one stop shopping option I can think of that would do a whole house and do it pretty well.

How in the world did you come upon the task of outfitting a house for eight? Someone won the lotto and hired you to handle it?

No, one of my clients sons-in-law's family is in a bad situation in MN. We were going to move them here at the end of the academic year because of job constraints, but when my client went on a preliminary visit, she said it was so horrible that we were moving them now. Their stuff from their old house is going into storage, and we are buying them new stuff. They are coming in by plane on Saturday, and I was responsible for providing a list of supplies I thought would be necessary, then purchasing the parts of the list that were approved - mostly soft goods. I shopped for hours last night. Good thing I love my client. I don't shop for just anybody.

With all the different logistics (flights, house, cars, shopping, insurance, everyotherdamnthing), it's been a hellaciously hectic week.
