On August 21st, like it, kudo it, favorite it, or whatever other ways there are to leave the writer feedback, then leave her a little love note.

Go to AO3, FF, Tumblr, fic archives, livejournal, wherever you read fic, and make a point to leave a comment on a fic (or fics) or send the author a message about her/his work.

One of my favorite ways to comment on Tumblr is to repost a ficlet, with my comment added. It both gives the piece a wider audience, and lets her know I liked it and why.

So on Friday, read some fic. If you like it, comment on it, even if it's just a "Loved it!" or "Thank you so much for writing my favorite pairing!"

Spread a little love.

You're on tumblr? I keep thinking I need to figure out tumblr. But it's scary and like....that's where the pithy, witty, thick-skinned fans hang out, and I don't feel like I'm any of those things.

I like your personalized version of this signal boost better than the one I C/P'd ♥

I don't like Tumblr for fandom. Conversation is more confrontational than the polite, if sometimes heated, discourse on livejournal. It is very difficult to have an actual conversation on Tumblr, and it's built that way. It wasn't meant for people to talk. It was meant for people to share pretty stuff and repost it ad nauseum.

That's been my impression of the site so far, and mostly why I've stayed away. Thanks for the confirmation! :)

yes, please. Over the last couple of years it feels like writers appreciation is slowly dying and people just want to consume and foremost they want porn, but rarely leave anything for the author. I'm totally fine with receiving a simple comment that says 'thank you', 'loved it' or something like that. I try to comment as often as possible or leave at least kudo it. It's important. I totally agreee: Spread the love!

thoughts on tumblr specifically ... I am still divided over whether or not it is a good thing for fandom, but I have to say ... most of my fandoms are there, and mostly there, if that makes sense. And there ARE people who can and will discuss in a reasoned fashion ... it often depends on the fandom, I think. And the generation of fans that make up the bulk of the shippers. I think its the exposure to the entirety of fandom, rather than the little pockets of it that people experience on LJ, that generally cause the problems. Plus the youth skew, of course. A lot of these kids haven't learned any manners yet, basically.

I love what you say about the little ficlets tho and here's a factoid: my writing output, and the number of fandoms I have written for just ZOOMED since I joined tumblr. The ask box/prompt mentality, and people's willingness to reblog those prompts makes it very rewarding to dash off a little fic here and there. And it's so easy to promise someone a three-sentence fic and end up writing 3000 words. (No pressure lets the muse turn up or not as she sees fit!)

And as to fic writers appreciation day ... I got some lovely appreciation but I had to laugh ... it's the one day in a while I hadn't had any comments on my fic. :P
