I love Mara's lists! It's so much easier to decide if I want to give something a try when I have something besides, "ooh, the ad for that looks pretty!"
ABC
Him & Us: Anthony Stewart Head plays an aging, gay British rock star (think Elton John). He's "Him". "Us" comprises the long time manager and entourage who work for, with and around him, including Ashley Williams (How I Met Your Mother) and Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica). Executive producers include Elton John as well as Michael Edelstein (Desperate Housewives). Cindy Chupack (Sex & The City) is the writer and an executive producer, Charles Shyer (Monk) is directing the pilot.
**Ooooh! Giles! And Spoon! If he's an aging gay rock star, he might sing. Swoon!
60 Minute Man: A suburban husband/father (David James Elliott of JAG) loses an hour of time each day, making him believe that he is a part of a big government conspiracy. Graham Yost (Boomtown) and Chris Brancato (X Files/Tru Calling) and the writers/executive producers. Jon Avnet (Boomtown) is directing the pilot.
**Ooooh! DJE! I’m so there. It even sounds interesting.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith: This is a midseason series based on the movie from the producers, directors and creators of the film.
**Um, unless Brad and Angelina are reprising their roles, this can’t be as good as the movie was. Besides, the movie was so much fun! How can they keep that up on a weekly basis?
Nine Lives: Chi McBride (Boston Public), Scott Wolf (Everwood), Lourdes Benedicto (NYPD Blue), John Billingsley (Enterprise), Jessica Collins (Unscripted) and Owain Yeoman (Kitchen Confidential) are all survivors of a 52-hour hostage situation when a bank robbery goes terribly wrong. Hank Steinberg (Without A Trace) is the writer/executive producer. Alex Graves (The West Wing) is directing the pilot.
**Hmmmm. John Billingsley.
Secrets of a Small Town: Angie Harmon (Law & Order) and John L. Adams (Dead Zone) star in a drama about the murder of a teenage girl and the disappearance of her sister, events that help uncover the long held secrets of a small town. Desperate Housewives/General Hospital's Chuck Pratt is the writer/executive producer. Adam Davidson from Lost is directing the pilot.
**And what would this mean for John’s role in Dead Zone? I’d love to see Angie Harmon on the small screen again.
CBS
In The Shadow of the Law: Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek) stars in a legal drama about a group of young associates in a powerful D.C. law firm. Carol Mendelson (CSI) is the writer/executive producer, Danny Cannon (also CSI) is directing the pilot.
**Josh! Oh, how I’ve missed him! Not sure it sounds very interesting, though.
Jericho: Nuclear attacks destroy most of America's largest cities, leaving only small towns like Jericho behind. Skeet Ulrich (Miracles), Eric Knudsen ("Saw II") and Lennie James ("Sahara") co-star. Stephen Chbosky (screenplay for "Rent") is the writer and an executive producer. John Turteltaub ("National Treasure") is an executive producer and directs the pilot.
**I liked the other description better. This makes it sound kinda boring.
The Way: In New England, the death of a powerful family's matriarch is handled by using witchcraft to hurt their rivals and build a successful business empire. Riley Smith (Andy Baker from Joan of Arcadia) stars. Adam Kulakow and Michael DeLuca ("Blade") are the executive producers, Kulakow the writer.
**Um, what???
Primary: UST abounds on a hostage negotiation squad between a male and a female team member. No cast available. Tim Story ("Fantastic Four") is the director/executive producer. Craig Silverstein (The Dead Zone) is the writer/executive producer.
**Well, this could be really good or it could be really bad. Just depends on who they cast.
NBC
Friday Night Lights: TV version of the 2004 movie. Kyle Chandler (Early Edition) replaces Billy Bob Thorton, Connie Britton is reprises her role from the film. Peter Berg, Brian Grazer and the rest of the production crew behind the film are working on the TV version.
**Kyle Chandler! I’ve not yet seen the movie, so have no idea how it’ll translate to the small screen, but Kyle Chandler!
Heroes: Two hour pilot. A group of "regular" people realize they all have superpowers. Greg Grunberg (Alias), Ali Larter ("Final Destination"), Hayden Panettiere (Book of Daniel), Santiago Cabera (Empire), Tawny Cypress (Jonny Zero), Masa Oka (Scrubs), Sendhil Ramamurthy (The Guiding Light) and Milo Ventiglia (Gilmore Girls) star. Tim Kring (Crossing Jordan) is the executive producer/writer.
**Hmmm. I could take or leave most of the cast, but I sure do like Crossing Jordan, so if it’d have the same sort of feel, I could get into it.
Seeing Red: Jeff Goldblum plays a brilliant, eccentric police officer who sees and talks to dead people. The dead people help out on cases. Graham Yost (Boomtown) is the writer and executive producers, "The Shawshank Redemption"'s Frank Darabont is directing the pilot.
**Didn’t UPN have a show like this with Dr. Jack? It didn’t go over very well. Maybe this’ll be lighter and more approachable (though I liked the other one just fine). I do love Jeff Goldblum.
