Actually, I did go to the roots - it's either Latin or Greek, I don't remember which - and that's where I got the "near" or "in the vicinity of" definitions of the prefix. So instead of finding useful information that would help me grok the term and use it, I just got irritated because I don't like it being applied to me.
On the other hand, what other people think of me is none of my business, so maybe I should just accept it and move on to something more important than a label for me.
