Miranda update 8/25
Aug. 25th, 2005 10:47 amWell, it seems that Miranda is just not ready to go yet. By the time
we got to the hospital, Miranda had much improved. She is not out of
the woods in the short term, and the
long-term prognosis is still not good, but for the moment, she's not done.
When we left last night, we had been kicked out by the nursing staff
at shift change, because Miranda had improved enough that the relaxed
2 person ICU visitor rule was being reinstated. She was on a
ventilator (or more precisely, a BiPAP), but beyond that, her vitals
looked good. She was awake and alert, to a degree, and while she
couldn't talk, she was communicating a little. She had a good grip
and squeezed my hand pretty good several times while I was sitting
there.
Apparently, she had some sort of reaction to a medication yesterday
morning, and possibly (this is just me talking, nothing I heard at the
hospital) aspirated some vomit during the days before when she'd been
having so much trouble keeping everything down. She either had a
collapsed lung or fluid-filled lung, and the MRI didn't show which,
but whichever, that's what caused the respiratory distress that
started everything yesterday.
Everything the doctor said yesterday evening was preceded by "We're
gonna wait and see...", so I guess we're gonna wait and see. I
haven't heard from her mom this morning, but I know she was hoping
that Miranda would be able to come off the ventilator and get moved
back out of ICU.
I talked to Kid last night and though it was difficult to discuss, I
wanted to be sure that if Miranda took a turn for the worse and she
didn't make it through the night, that Kid would be satisfied with
what she had. I think she finally understood what I was getting at,
and she talked to Miranda some more when we went back upstairs, and
made sure to tell her that she loved her.
I missed Miranda's smile.
Thanks for your thoughts, prayers and work on her behalf, and ours.
Yesterday was a really rough day, but thanks to you all in our corner,
we made it through to fight another day.
