Movie: Batman Begins
Jul. 25th, 2005 10:58 amI like this one best.
This is far more about the legend of Batman than action or romance or titillating costumes, though there is no shortage of action. I love Michael Caine as Alfred, and love Morgan Freeman as the unassuming R&D scientist. Gary Oldman is also in it fairly prominently, and I didn't recognize him until I was watching the credits. Fantastic.
I'm not a OMG-Christian-Bale-is-HOT fangirl, so I had no expectations one way or the other there. He's very spare in the face, very fit in the body, and plays Bruce Wayne as a fallible human man, deciding how to be the kind of man he believes his father to be.
Katie Holmes, on the other hand, I wasn't too sure about. I've seen her in a few things besides Dawson's Creek, and she never acted so well that I didn't compare her character in some way to Joey. This time, I was unexpectedly impressed. During the nearly last scene with Rachel and Bruce, after I got past the unwelcome distraction of her nipples poking out her silk shirt, her words and delivery were a wee bit Joey-esque for me, but over quickly enough. I hope they didn't do that nipple/silk shirt thing on purpose, because it completely took me out of the story, and not in a good way.
If I had mad movie money like I used to, I'd probably go see this again a couple more times in the theater. Instead, I'll wait until it hits the dollar movie and see it there again, then buy the DVD. This'll be the only Batman movie I own.
