Apr. 29th, 2003 09:03 pmToday I was checking my bank balance because sometimes I have to see if I have the money before I buy stuff.
I found this charge from a company name that I didn't recognize. I figured it out after nearly twenty minutes of searching through receipts. Turns out it was my computer guy. I talk to him, tell him that if he's going to run credit cards, he needs to tell people up front that the name on the statement will be something different from the name they know.
He tells me a story about the company and how it got its name, which is actually a dba of a parent company, Arabesque. He goes on to tell me that he and his business partner incorporated the parent company on September 10, the day before the world changed again. After September 11, they got an enormous number of phone calls from irate people accusing them of being an Arab company, prompting them to get the dba with which I am familiar.
So, today, I am grateful that my mother was a teacher, willing and eager to pass on her love of the English language with all its intricacies and peculiarities. I learned a great many things from her, including a desire to acquire a colossal vocabulary. Unlike the many ignorant callers to this company, I know that arabesque is a ballet movement, connected in no way I know of to anything Arabic.
Thanks, Mom.
